Ian Welham discussing the scholarships available to DECA students.

DECA, or Delta Epsilon Chi, is an international association of high school and college students studying marketing, management, and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service. DECA is a club that is held in almost every high school across the United States and offers many benefits to its members. One of the greatest benefits of DECA are the vast amount of college scholarship opportunities available.

DECA holds competitive events throughout the school year. These competitions are important to one’s success in the DECA club. Some examples of the individual competitive events are the Principles of Marketing, Retail Merchandising and Quick Serve Restaurant Management; team competitive events are Creative Service Project, Entrepreneurship Promotion Project and Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan. Most of these events include a written exam and a presentation.

DECA’s college scholarships come from an array of widely known corporations. In addition to corporate partner scholarships, students are able to apply for the Harry A. Applegate scholarship. This scholarship is merit-based and very competitive.

Other corporate partner scholarships include: fifteen ($1,000) scholarships from the athletic company Finish Line, nine ($1,000) scholarships from the auto parts maker NAPA, eight ($2,000) scholarships from the retail giant Target, three ($1,000) scholarships from the retail companies TJ Maxx and Marshalls, along with others that will be announced throughout the year.

Along with the possibly of getting money for college, being a member of DECA is an impressive accomplishment to put on your college applications and discuss in college interviews. Colleges want a well-rounded student who can balance both exceptional grades and after-school activities. Being a member of DECA can be a great step into your educational future.
