Visiting Colleges—The Backstage Tour February 16, 2010

When looking at colleges, what are the first things we consider? Generally, it’s the numbers we find in the college guides, such as U.S. News & World Report — number of students, class size, average SAT scores, graduation rate, etc. And that’s fine because, after all, academics come first.

But as we start narrowing down our college choices, don’t forget: we’ve got to live here. It’s not like going away for a long weekend where we can make do with just about any accommodations. For the next four years (if all goes well) we’re going to call this place home. So we’d better make sure it has all the things we need to
be comfortable and happy.

When you take a college tour, that’s the public “show.” It’s a “performance” that’s scripted and choreographed. And if you go by just that, you might find yourself bereft six weeks into freshman year.

A new article in our library gives you some suggestions on what to look for over and above the college’s public tour. We call it doing the backstage tour. If you really want to know if a college is a good fit for you, these are the steps to take.
