Paul Partridge on the new twist in college applications: video

The first (camera) shot has been fired. And if this production is a hit, the formerly sleepy and somewhat mind-numbing college application process is about to be changed forever.

Get ready to channel your inner James Cameron, kids. Tufts University is now accepting videos as part of their admissions process! Even though it’s optional, already 1,000 video applications have poured into the school outside of Boston.

Andy Warhol talked about 15 minutes of fame. At present, the student videos are restricted to one minute in length. Pressure on. Sounds like the new “Minute to Win It” game show on TV. However in this case, you have one minute to win admission to college. Although I imagine in time, the 60-second time limit will change, as students and parents get more comfortable with the idea (and the medium).

This is such a dramatic game-changer, we devoted a new article to it, which can be found in our library. As you’ll see, not all educators think this is a boffo idea.

Many of the Tufts video applications are posted on YouTube. One interesting, and unexpected, development on the Tufts campus is that students who are already enrolled are checking out their possible future classmates—posting comments and even rooting for certain candidates.
